Straight walled bowl seems like an oxymoron...but the need for a ramen bowl is real and it looks cool. Using a long plastic rib and emphasizing a good foot makes this a bit challenging when fighting against gravity! Good luck

Переглядів 4,2 тис.11 місяців тому
Seems as though everyone agrees.. the cylinder is the basic skill for all potters. Especially those that want to master everything else. Fight the nature of the wheel that wants to make a bowl! Fight the centripetal force! Here is a basic video on how to throw a straight, consistent cylinder on a pottery wheel from Mudgirl pottery

Throwing a Shaped Vessel: aka Sexy Pot
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
A shaped pot (vase, sexy pot) is really a cylinder with some gentle curves. Too when we try to shape a pot on the pottery wheel we over do it and forget that the centripetal force is also assisting. This pottery video addresses that adjustment and more! Enjoy!

Throwing a Straight Wall Bowl- Take Two

You may have seen my first attempt at this video. Error, after error, it ended on a flop!! But a potter doesnt give up! And this is the second attempt taking into account all the lessons learned from the previous attempt! At Mud Clay Studio we dont guarantee perfect pots, but we do guarantee some failures! Which is a good thing! Enjoy!

Do you mean that you left the foot weight heavier by keeping the base/floor thicker? X

I've been in an adult education pottery class, 2 half hours a week since forever but it suits me, I learnt some good skills and now have cupboards full of mugs, bowls, little jugs and I'm trying to up the amount of clay trying to make bowls larger, more like platters for putting fruit in for example, with a lot of support. From a great tutor I threw an 8lb bird bath for the garden and I loved the whole process, however what I can't do is move the clay upwards, and previously I've just trimmed it away, where as now I want to be a better thrower and not produce heavy bottomed anything. This video and your teaching style suits me just fine, you say it as it is, no fancy tricks or slight of hand just good honest throwing technique. I'm trying to join 2 tall pieces together, so seeing this video come up for my the timing was perfect. I love your videos, so you keep throwing and I'll keep watching and learning. 😅😊

Can someone tell me the best way to re-centre if it de-centres once you’ve opened up? Is there anyway to save it? And what are the causes? Very new to this and it’s so difficult 😭

I am new to ceramics. I really enjoyed your video and your video and I have learned a lot. I think the flash notifications would be better placed above or below what you are demonstrating. Just my thoughts. I found myself trying to look behind the notifications. I may have not missed anything but ? Other than that, I found your video very helpful.
